The Middle Ground

September 13th, 2006 (02:45 pm)

current song: Punk Farm

As writers, have you ever found yourself hunting down the middle ground? What I mean is, there is the background of your ideas of who these people are that you are writing about, how you are expecting these situations to work out, and the themes you want to come through in your writing, and there is the foreground that is the action and that is the description of the environs of the scene and all the scene encounters including the appearance and style of the characters. Or vice versa, depending on what you concentrate on as a writer. But the middle ground seems to be the real writing, the mesh of it all together and natural but highly skilled. Is this all Greek to you or do you understand what I mean? How do you best reach your middle ground?

I havent been around much the past couple of days because I have been sore-throat sick. I did actually have 2 seizures last night, worse seizures than I have had for a long time. Im ok though. They look scarier than they are.

One thing that really annoys me is that I have such difficulty in tuning in even talk radio inside the house. I cant get TV stations either, but that doesnt bug me as much because the 2 or possibly 3 stations available dont really interest me (one is in French!). You'd think tuning a radio would be a simple business. I move the antenna in circles trying to find the best direction to point it in. I find the best direction, the one in which I hear sound instead of simply static, so then I take it to the next level. I move it closer to the window in that direction. That makes absolutely no difference. I move it high, I move it low. I get pissed and turn it off. After 1/2 an hour I turn it on again, go through the process all over again. I wonder why it is that the best reception I get is when my hand is on the antenna and only then. I also wonder if my ears are less sensitive because it always seems to get a better reception the second time I turn it on. And you know what I get when I do finally get passable reception? An interview with the Jarrett J. Krosoczka who author the children's book "Punk Farm" . I thought, yeah, thats singularly apppropriate for me. The book's movie rights has been picked up by Dreamworks, and a film is due to be out in the next couple years. Is this a possible website for it? The song is cool. Yeahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!

This may sound like a really strange question but have any of you ever noticed yourself getting sleeping after half an hour or so writing, even if you have had plenty of sleep and are not over tired? Is it the relaxation of writing your thoughts out? Is it avoiding the tough spots? What the heck is it?! And am I alone in ever having experienced this?

School has just started, and you know what that means! Little young me has more homework than my daughter!!! Paperwork broke down the door, and nearly drowned us. I wish it had whisked me away like a magic paperowrk ride but no such luck. Last night was the first set of grossly disorganized auditions for the school play, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. My daughter is after Dorothy...and she has a decent chance of getting it! Woo hoo! But I have been battling symptoms of lagging depression, a lot of ups and downs...Tonight is the second round, the call-backs, and she's in for it 2night...woo hoo! But going to have to deal with the mess with the other parents, the crowd, the neglected kids, the no-way-to-know-whats-going-on because you cant hear over all the noise, I feel like Im going to go postal! And its only the beginning (maaniacal cackling)...

Cool! I thought the site was down forever...snagged from everybody!

My Writing Program

September 6th, 2006 (12:32 pm)

current mood: artistic

Here I am sitting, at the allotted time for the planning for my writing program, wanting to hurry it up so that I can watch a netflix that just came in. I was excited about the prospect of this new endeavor, when it first occurred to me, that it was something I would accomplish and looking forward to discoveries about myself and my writing I might uncover in the process. The truth is, I love to write. The fact is, no matter how many ideas I have, I am excrutiatingly slow at getting them on paper. The great mystery, for me, is within that contradiction. I have encountered all manner of advice from fellow writers at writers’ conferences, friends who write, articles in writing magazines, and even therapists. I have been at a loss, since few people have seemed to really understand that I never run out of ideas, I simply can’t force myself to move any faster than a snail’s pace at constructing them. Perhaps I never slow down enough in my usual routine to give myself a chance to step into that inspiration flow. Perhaps the aging process scares me, how it was so very much easier when I was a child with few responsibilities. Talent is not reliable. Diligence always pays off in one way or another. At the moment, the urge to hurry is also the urge to fill up the empty page, make it amiable and less forbidding, create something out of nothing and hopefully leave a trace of me behind.
I have, however, digressed. The mystery may have many facets, but the problem is simple. I need to find the best way for me to work. I need to satisfy the inquiry within myself as to whether or not I have truly followed through with the advice I have been given. So, month by month, I shall try various different methods in the art of writing, reporting first on my concerns about them and concluding with my findings as to how, when, and why they work or how, when, and why they don’t work, for me. I expect that through these exercises, I will be able to tailor the most effective methods to my specific needs, with the strong background of a structured try. I will also require to be held accountable, and so I will report here throughout each month.

These are the methods I have singled out to try for a specific time everyday:

o September: Writing by Prompts, one prompt or project at a time.
o October: Freewriting first, again working on one project at a time AFTER freewriting for 15 minutes.
o November: Writing so many words/day, to strive for the Novel in a Month project. (approx. 1,700)
Also, outlining my plot first.
o December: Multi-tasking…working on many projects at once, within an allotted time.

The special concern I have for September, is once I get going with something, sometimes I like to combine everything I’m working on together, which equals a plot mess. I always think of sorting the mess as apart of the creative process, but its not always easy for me to decide and stick to my decisions about what part of the script is going where. I think this is often a stumbling block for me because I like to keep in mind what Im doing with the project, the whole project, while Im working on it, and yet I change things all the time.

why do we fall, bruce?
(lets see if you can get through it. if not, you're too scared about your past)

- Longest relationship:
3 years.

- Shortest relationship:
Two weeks maybe?

- How many boyfriends/girlfriends have told you that they love you?:
Many. It doesn't take long for a guy to say it, but to really know what they mean when they say it, that takes much longer.

- Have you ever thought that you were going to marry the person?
A few, yes.

- Have you ever loved someone so much that it hurt?:

- Have you ever made a boyfriend or girlfriend cry?:
Not many would have admitted it, but I think so.

- Are you happier single or in a relationship?:
I'm happy when I'm happy. A relationship doesn't have that much to do with that, except for the beginning warm fuzzy stuff, or if its seriously going down hill. I think in general I'm happier without one.

- Have you ever been cheated on?
Not really. Maybe, but not really.

- What is your favorite thing about the opposite sex?:
Men tend to be freer in spirit than women. more assertive and less worried, and so I like how fun a man can be to be around and how easy going. Manly features I like are voice, strong shoulders, goatees, strong hands.....etc

- What is your favorite thing about the same sex?
Sometimes its easier to talk to a woman and feel understood. As a general rule, I dont have much in common with other women, or so it seems and dont get along that well with other women though Id like to, because everyone needs a balance between same sex and opposite sex friends, at some time in their lives, it seems.

- Have you ever had your heart broken?:

- Have you ever broken someone's heart?:
Not as much as they claimed.

- Talk to any of your exes?

- If you could go back in time and change things to where you could still be with one of your exes, would you?:
Sometimes Id like to. But I could never change anything to make it right, he wasn't at the right point in his life to have the relationship.

- Think any of your exes feel the same way?:
I doubt any of them care.

- Do you believe that you are a good boyfriend or girlfriend?:
Not really. I'm a great person to know, but Im too complicated and sensitive sometimes to be easy to get along with. Sometimes I think it would be easier if I was a witch or a nag cause the ones I've seen seem to have it easier, but I can only do what I think is right, and be who I am.

- Have you dated people who were not good to you?:
OH my YES!

- Have you been in an abusive relationship?

- Have you dated someone older then you?:
I usually do.

- Younger?
4 months younger :) I've thought about him lately.

- Do you regret anything that you have done with a boyfriend or girlfriend?

- Do you believe everyone deserves a second chance?
It depends on the situation, what each person needs, and how each is taking responsibility for their actions.

- Believe in love at first sight?:
No. But I dont discredit those who do.

- Ever dated two people at once?:
Sort of. That was a weird situation. But not usually, no.

- Ever been given an Engagement ring?:

- Do you want to get married?
Yes. Id kinda like to skip the dating part...be friends and then get married.

- Do you have something to say to any of your exes?:
Despite everything, I still love you and think of you everyday. WTF?!

- Ever stolen someone's boyfriend or girlfriend?:

- Ever liked someone else's boyfriend or girlfriend?:
On occasion.

- Does heartbreak really feel as bad as it sounds?:
No, its worse. Its not a break, its being dragged across pavement for 100 miles. Its being torn to tiny bits. But yes you do learn from it, glean what you need from what you've got, and move on.

Evictions off campus due to suicide attempts OR admission to a hospital for depression

I was outraged when I did. The last thing a depressed student needs is to be immediately tossed onto the streets. Yes I understand that these colleges/universities may not have the resources nor the necessitity to build mental institutions on campus, but certainly they should be required to treat their fellow human beings with some measure of dignity, if not even a trace of compassion. I do not accept the premise that they are seeking whats in the students' best interests. I wonder if in fact they are serving their own, in seeking shelter for their insurance policies away from legal storms. The problem for them is that within the ADA the legal standard for individuals with disabilities is the most integrated policies possible, in concurrence with the standards specified by the individual's treatment providers. There are certain factors that need to be considered here, such as whether or not the students could be defined under the law as persons with disabilities, etc. Even if these institutions of learning are safe due to these specific circumstances, it seems they are building their campus policies on quicksand rather than modern legal ethics.
